5 Tips For A Healthy Heart

A healthy diet can help reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease, prevent weight gain and reduce your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.

So, we’ve pulled together some simple tips to help you and your loved one to eat heart smart.

Top 5 Tips

1. Spice It Up

Using spices rather than salt or fat to flavour food is a much better option. Turmeric, sage, rosemary and ginger are all good to packing a punch.

2. Top Up Your Omega-3

To support normal heart function, ensure you have 250mg of Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) daily. The oils of fatty fish are full of omega-3 fatty acids. EPA is one of the two primary omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.

A key health benefit for EPA is its ability to reduce and control inflammation. The other primary omega-3 found in fish oil is DHA. DHA is essential to brain development and brain health, and has been shown to protect against a number of diseases, so both are important.

3. Fill Up On Pulses And Wholegrains

Pulses and wholegrains are a good source of magnesium which is important in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body including those responsible for regulating blood pressure.

4. Eat More Soy

It has been noted that Asian populations who consume soy foods as a daily staple have a lower incidence of heart disease than those who eat a more western diet (Epidemiologic Reviews). Try edamame beans or tofu.

5. Brighten Up Your Diet

Naturally colourful and tasty, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can help keep you healthy and lower your risk of heart disease. Variety is key so try to mix it up as much as possible. Different colours offer different healthy nutrients and help your body to function at its best.

Bonus Tip

Keep on moving!

Physical activity can help reduce your risk of heart and circulatory disease. It can also help you control your weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol and improve your mental health – helping you to feel great.

When we talk about being physically active, we don’t mean putting on sports kit and joining the gym. You don’t have to get hot and sweaty. We really are talking about getting up and moving around more. So it can include walking, going up the stairs, gardening or housework.
