Being apart from your older family members or friends at this time can be really tricky. It can lead to feelings of guilt and helplessness. However, there are plenty of things you can do to support relatives or friends from a distance.

The little things can really make a difference during these unprecedented times.

1. Acknowledge the situation

Feeling ineffective or guilty is perfectly normal and there are lots of other people in the same boat. Recognising these feelings and that you are doing what you can to support your family and friends from a distance is a good starting point.

2. Keep in touch

Video calls are part of our everyday lives now and they really do make the difference to those who live alone and/or miss seeing their family/friends. Emailing or writing a letter or card are also great ways to show you’re thinking of them. If you’ve got children, there’s nothing better than receiving a hand drawn picture or note for putting a smile on their face.

3. Discuss expectations

Be realistic about how often you can check in on loved ones. There’s no point saying you’ll call twice a day then you struggle to keep it up whilst you juggle the rest of your work and family commitments. Regular, consistent calls are better all round as everyone knows what to expect, they can look forward to them and have some quality time ‘together’.

4. Share the support

Remember you’re not the only one around who can check in on your loved one. Don’t be embarrassed or afraid to ask for help from friends and other family members. It also means your loved one has a variety of people to speak to and adds extra interest to their day. Remember there are lots of local COVID-19 community support groups providing support with getting medication, essentials food shops etc who are happy to help. Local groups include the Wiltshire Wellbeing Hub on 0300 003 4576 and the Bath & North East Somerset Compassion Community Hub on 0300 247 0050.

5. Look after yourself

If you feel guilty, remind yourself that you're doing the best you can and know that you're not alone. Make sure you create a support network for yourself as well.

If you need any support or advice about caring for a loved one do book a call. We can arrange short-term support with no minimum contract - we’re only here for as long as you need us.
